about student assistance programsIt would be great if all children came to school ready to get a quality education. Sad to say, that's not the case for a significant number. Physical abuse, parents with alcohol or other drug problems, students who are harmfully involved with drugs themselves, depression, eating disorders, bullying...there are many ways in which children can indeed be left behind. Charging a single person--school counselor, social worker, etc.--with the
task of "fixing" these kids doesn't work very well. We know
that. So what has been proven to work? Creating a safety net that
identifies these students, and a system in place that offers support and
assistance. Never leaving it up to chance. We call these
innovative programs Student Assistance Programs. That "p" word often times causes schools trouble. Perhaps they've gotten stuck on one companies program that insists things be done a certain way--even though that approach doesn't fit the schools needs. Really, that "p" should stand for philosophy. A philosophy that says you recognize students don't leave their troubles at home, but bring them with them to school. A philosophy that says we must address and intervene on those things that interfere with the educational process and involve all in the solution--parents, students ,staff. Linking off of this page are several different levels of assistance we can provide to you as you strive to improve the way in which you offer the helping hand to your students.
